Your Total German Shepherd Dog - A Pet Owner's Guide

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Is a German Shepherd right for you? How will you know unless you read the owner's manual? Too many pets are brought back to animal shelters or worse, because of inexperience owners. Not just these type of dogs, but any pet. You need to know as much about that breed before you take them home.

A former co-worker of mine decided to get a dog for their oldest son. Neither he nor his wife had ever owned a pet before. They were inexperience. After a month went by, I asked about their dog. My co-worker replied, "We brought him to the Human Society a couple of weeks ago. He was shedding too much and we were tired of vacuuming."

If he had read the owner's manual first, would they have brought that poor dog into their home to begin with? If they had done their research, my co-worker would have had an idea on if a pet of any kind was right for them.

None of my pets came with an owner's manual. There were times that I wish they did. Even so, we have taken the time to research and train ourselves so that we can understand and be better pet owners.

How would you like to learn the secrets of having the healthiest and happiest canine possible without having to pay for an expensive training course?

Debbie Ray is the author of "Your Total German Shepherd Dog, A Pet Owner's Guide" and she has over 35 years of experience raising German Shepherds. She has raised them from puppies to senior citizens. Debbie's past experiences with her own dogs has given her an insight into this type of breed that few people have and she would like to share her knowledge with you. This 195 page book is very through and it answers just about any questions that you might have about your dog. Being a German Shepherd owner myself, I have learned so much from this ebook and Debbie offers.

Are you familiar with the health issues of this type of breed?

All breeds are known for their distinct health issues. No pet is maintenance free!
Here is a list of the Health problems of this type of dog. That does not mean your Shepherd will have these problems and it isn't to discourage you from owning this beautiful dog. This is to make you aware of the potential problems before you bring home that cute little puppy.

1. Abnormal development of the hip joint.
2. Elbow Dysplasia: Improper development of the three bones making up the elbow. The joint is loose.
3. Panosteitis: A bone disease that can last as long as 18 months, that causes pain. Aspirin can be helpful in controlling the pain.
4. Von Willebrand's Disease: is a blood disorder, a deficiency in clotting factor.
5. Progressive posterior paresis: is a neural condition, a paralysis of one or both hind legs.
6. Bacterial infections an skin allergies.
7. Abnormal growth of tissue or tumor.
8. Inflammation of the cornea and is potentially blinding.
9. Abnormal openings around the dog's anal area which soon get badly infected and can be painful.
10. Disease of the heart muscle.

The best way to keep your dog healthy is to find a reputable breeder. Or if you are looking into a rescue shelter, find out if they have up to date information on the dog. And always keep regular scheduled visits with your veterinarian.

Dewey - By Vicki Myron

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

A book about a cat in a library? How interesting a story can that be? The answer is - VERY interesting! Dewey is a great book - the biography of a real cat in a real library, Spencer Public Library, Spencer, Iowa, USA. I read the jacket, and knew I was in for a treat!

A ginger kitten, found in the library book return chute, on the coldest Iowa morning ever. With frost bitten paws, but still trusting, loving. It seems no matter what the animal or what it has had to endure at the hands of a cruel human, they know when they are in good hands - they have a 6th sense about these things.

Well Dewey Readmore Books - as he was christened by the townsfolk - although full of mischief, like any kitten, felt the love from the humans he had been dumped on, and he returned it 10 fold! He lived happily in the Spencer Public Library for 19 years. First becoming a town celebrity, revered by the townsfolk, and then becoming an international celebrity. People travelled from all over the world to meet him. Travelling 100's, even 1000's of miles, sending Christmas and birthday cards. Amazing the effect he had not just on the town, but on the world.

I knew this book would be sad, and in some places it really is. But also funny and, dare I say it about a book, "cute". It is a touching and entertaining tale, sensitively written by Myron - the lady who found Dewey on that fateful January morning. Vicki loved Dewey, as if he were her own, and although he belonged to the town, in his heart he was hers.

This book made me laugh, it made me cry, it even made me relate it to my own cats! The ending - I wont spoil it - touched me to the core. Dewey loved everyone he came into contact with, and shared something special, and something of himself with every single one of them. He knew who needed his comfort, having that 6th sense, not just to know when he was in the right hands but also to know when his special comforting nature was needed by those around him. He forged hundreds of deep and loving friendships with the unlikeliest of people and many of those are described in the pages of the book.

For a cat to have had such an effect on so many people's lives, truly shows how special Dewey was. This book also highlights the beauty of owning pets and the rewards one can get from it. A special book, it truly is worth the price and the time invested in reading it. Buy it now its purr-fectly enchanting!

With hope for a better future

Secrets to Dog Training

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Secrets to Dog Training (formerly named SitStayFetch) has been revamped and was officially launched on February 2, 2009. SitStayFetch has been the top selling dog training course for over four years, and it has been bought by over 216,000 dog owners world-wide. Having reviewed it in great detail, I can fully understand why it continues to hold the top spot. The revamped version promises to be even better!

Secrets to Dog Training is an extremely comprehensive guide, written by the world renowned trainer, Daniel Stevens. Although the 261-page manual is impressively detailed, its step-by-step format provides straight-forward instructions on how to quickly identify and solve dog behavior problems. It also includes many excellent pictures!

All of the training methods described in the book are tried and true, having been used by Daniel Stevens in his own life as a professional dog trainer.

A 5-page table of contents lets you know from the beginning that this guide is jam-packed full of information. The course is not just one more dog training guide, although that section alone is worth the purchase price. The first part is for owners of a new dog or puppy, covering subjects such as diet and nutrition, house training, how to puppy-proof your home, choosing a vet, grooming, general health, etc. These are just some of the subjects covered to give you an idea of the wide range of information.

Several different training techniques are outlined in the course, including crate training, clicker training, dog whispering, and more. Next, the more advanced behavior issues such as chewing, biting, aggression, digging, jumping, etc. are covered. Several informative and interesting case studies are included in this section. We all love a good story!

In addition, there is a chapter on how to understand your dog and the significance of the owner being perceived as the alpha in the home. Doggy facial expressions, vocals and body language are also included in this section. Aided by photographs, the chapters on obedience training are well articulated and the many stances and commands are presented in excellent detail.

I've outlined just a fraction of what is covered but I'm sure you will agree that it is impressive. I had already heard great things about this course before I actually took a look at it so had high expectations. I have to say that Secrets to Dog Training has not disappointed me - in fact, I'm amazed at the quality and quantity of the information offered for such a low price.

This book is well-written using easily understood language. My reading experience was enhanced by the fact that the book is broken down into small chapters, making it easy to understand and follow. Being faced with a wall of text can be quite overwhelming!

I was glad to see that Secrets to Dog Training provides instructions for obedience training for all ages and problem behaviors. All too often dog trainers offer training for puppies, not recognizing that these problem behaviors can continue into a dog's adulthood.

Another excellent feature is the free consultations offered by the team at Secrets to Dog Training when you buy the course. Just send the team an email and they will provide you with an individual answer for your specific dog behavior problem. You'll receive a response full of practical tips and expert advice.

The following bonus items are included when you buy the guide: an audio book plus 5 extra e-books on house training, security training, aggression, grooming, and secrets to becoming the alpha dog.

A new and exciting bonus being included with the course is a 30-minute downloadable video, which shows effective methods to solve those annoying obedience issues. It is presented by Dave Johnson, the extremely popular dog care professional, who makes it all seem so easy!

The detailed information covered is easy to comprehend and extremely effective. This book is not only useful to dog owners who need help with problem behaviors in their pets. The information in this guide would be of use to everyone looking to have a great rapport with their dog.

Find out why Secrets to Dog Training is the top selling dog training guide for the 4th year in a row!

An Honest Review Of 'Dog Owner Boot Camp'

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Have you bought a new puppy and don't quite know how to go about potty training him? Does your dog constantly embarrass you with his insistence on smelling the crotch of everyone who comes through your front door? Is your dog exhibiting aggressive behaviour to the point of nipping at children? If you answered YES to any of the above questions, then you just might be in need of a dog training boot camp manual - something that will guide you on what to do with your dog and prevent you from going totally crazy.

Wouldn't it be nice to have your dog sitting calmly by your side when you open the door to greet a guest? Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to take your dog out for a walk without having to constantly tug on his leash in order to prevent him from chasing after children and other animals? Wouldn't life be perfect if your dog would heel, stay, and sit every time you tell him to and simply await your command rather than insist on what he wants to do? A dog training boot camp manual will certainly help you achieve these things and more.

Let's take a look at one such manual - an eBook entitled "Dog Owner Boot Camp." Is this eBook the dog training boot camp manual that will solve your dog problems? Let's find out.

The book's author claims that this manual promotes a dog training system that is designed for dog owners who have very little or no training experience at all. She also says that the eBook will make you realize that dog training can be very simple and that it can be fun for both you and your dog.

Dr. Steve Kornfeld, a world-renowned veterinarian with over 14 years of experience, says that this dog training boot camp eBook has effectively captured the real essence of owning, training, and raising a dog. In fact, Dr. Kornfeld says that the book is remarkable for its discussion on the special relationship between dog and owner in a manner that makes it seem almost as if it was written by a dog!

The eBook uses easily understood step-by-step instructions that guide you through the entire process of becoming a responsible dog owner. It begins with the process of finding the right breed of dog and then guides you through the intricacies of each stage of your dog's life. It helps you understand why your dog behaves the way he does and tells you how best to handle a specific behaviour. And because caring for a dog requires more than just obedience training, the book also delves into the subject of grooming.

The eBook is not only very comprehensive; it is made even more remarkable by the fact that the words it contains are spoken right from the heart of a dog owner who knows exactly what she is talking about. If dogs were sold with a dog training boot camp manual, then this book would probably be the manual of choice.

There is No Secret to Dog Training

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

There really is no secret to dog training.

Let me repeat and complete that comment.

There really is no secret to dog training once you read it.

Like the over 216,000 readers of this program, I've had my share of dogs with bad habits.  At the time, I didn't relate the problem as me being the cause except when my pet actually did something right, and then I was a great trainer.  When my pet did not listen, it was the dog's bad habit.

I think back over the dogs I've had in my life, and the list is lengthy. The first in memory was a mix named Suzie. I was quite young and Suzie quite old. She was a good dog, with very few problems that I can remember. A German Shepherd named Duke. Another Duke but a Kerry blue terrier. Duchess was the Dachshund and Peggy the Chihuahua. These were all before I was old enough to be on my own. My mother had two Poodles and a Shitzu after I left the nest.

As an adult, there was Chessy the Schnauzer, A mean Scottie named Sam. Judy the English Bulldog, Tessie the Pomeranian and today it's Abigail, another English Bulldog.  The best by far has been my English Bulldog Abigail. Stubborn, but still the best.

The dogs when I was a youngster had a variety of bad habits. From nipping, chewing and actually attacking. I think of those pets and how, myself, a brother, sister and parents all affected their bad habits. No wonder they were confused.

My dogs, as an adult, were by far more polite, well-behaved and attentive to habits. More than likely due to less confusion. They did not have five conflicting personalities creating the bad habits.

I never really read up on or investigated dog training until the first Bulldog Judy. It wasn't this program, but books from the Library. They were helpful but not like this easy to follow program.

Judy was a good dog and passed away at eleven years old. Tessie the Pomeranian died from kidney failure at four. Abigail is still my sidekick and the most receptive patient to dog training. Secrets of Dog Training has played a big part in her development, or should I say my development. I'm not sure who trained whom.

If your concern is aggression, chewing, house training or any of twenty-five problems, this is the program for you.  260 e-pages with photos and a 30 minute video to download. It is the easiest to read and understand.

So there is no secrets to dog training after you've read

Dogs Can Sign, Too - A Breakthrough Method For Teaching Your Dog to Communicate - By Sean Senechal

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Have you ever wanted to sit down and have a conversation with your dog? Or just ask your pooch "Why are you barking?" Well, that just might be possible according to Sean Senchal. In her book "Dogs Can Sign, Too", she presents a method for communicating with your canine -- a system of gestures that she calls "K9Signs" which could allow your dog to "talk" to you. The goal is to teach dogs to use this sign language to ask for things, to ask or answer questions, and to respond to your commands or comments.

Senechal has established an "academy" (the AnimalSign Center) where people are working every day with dogs and other animals to see just what their limits are as "language learners". The author emphasizes that it will probably be years before any definite conclusions can be drawn as to the ability of non-primate animals to communicate with us, but she offers a number of examples of what she has accomplished in working with her own pets.

One example had to do with her dog Chal who she has worked with for several years. Chal came into a room where Senechal was talking to a friend and tapped a storage drawer with her nose, then lifted her right front leg which is the K9Sign for an object. When Senechal made the sign for "What?", Chal lifted her right front leg and flicked it slightly, the sign for "keys". The author opened the drawer and there was the key to the yard gate; Chal immediately ran out to the gate and waited for Senechal to open it for her.

That story may not seem all that unusual or interesting; after all I had a border collie whose parents herded cattle and sheep and were able to respond to a wide variety of hand and voice signals. The main difference is that in Chal's case she not only responds to various signs, she offers her own canine signs. If you thought Lassie was brilliant, imagine a herd dog that could come to you and sign "Lamb caught under branch in gully over there; wildcat sneaking up on her -- hurry". That's the fascinating part of K9Signs; not just the ability to communicate but the complexity of the information that can be exchanged in just a few signs.

K9Signs training, as Senechal points out, is fundamentally different from obedience training. It calls for encouraging your dog to show creative behavior rather than obedience. Your dog has to be prompted to initiate communication and make requests rather than just respond to commands. Conversation implies a give and take, a two-sided method of communicating and that means your dog has to feel free to "talk back".

Maybe the most important thing to remember in K9Sign training is to make signing fun. If your dog is obviously having trouble understanding what you're doing and seems to be getting frustrated or losing interest, back up and try to break the lesson down into simpler steps and reward the accomplishment of each smaller step. Or go back to something your dog has already learned and enjoys (like playing with a favorite toy) and make that sign. Later you can go back to working on the new sign. Senechal constantly emphasizes the importance of patience, rewards, and slow, easy steps in teaching K9Signs.

I'm not sure I would have the patience for K9Sign training and really, like most dogs, my two already communicate with me without animal signing. For example my Lab will bark and let me know if someone comes to the front door. But if he and I could make use of K9Signs, who knows -- maybe he could tell me "Pat at front door, has pizza" or "Two strange men at front door, smell friendly". Or instead of simply moving around restlessly, maybe our Rottweiler could tell me "Feel bad - need go out and eat grass". It would require a good deal of time and patience, but maybe one of these days I'll work up the courage to give K9Signs a try (and find out what my dogs are really thinking).

If you're interested in learning more about Sean Senechal's K9Signs system or her method of animal signing in general, her books "AnimalSigns To You" and "Dogs Can Sign Too", are both available at http://www.amazon.com.

Dog Training Book - "Dog Training 4 Life" - Reviewed in Detail by Another Expert

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

An exclusive new dog training book, "Dog Training 4 Life", has recently been published online. It is an excellent training resource for people who would like to benefit from the author, Anne Pottinger's wealth of experience with dogs. She has trained not only puppies, but also older dogs, including many discards rescued from shelters. In fact her wealth of knowledge stems from more than thirty years working with dogs.

Before moving to the US, Anne began training dogs in England under the mentorship and direction of the late, great Barbara Woodhouse, at that time a renowned trainer who also published several bestselling books on the subject and had television shows syndicated worldwide.

Dogs love to please, your praise means everything to them. Unfortunately too many owners never think to praise or reward good behavior, relying instead upon negative reinforcement and punishing bad behavior. Dog Training 4 Life is structured entirely upon Positive Reinforcement coupled with consistency.

Positive reinforcement takes the two things dogs care most about in life-- praise and food -- and make them work to the owner's advantage. The principal is simple: use praise and treats to reward him whenever he does something you are asking him to do correctly, and be consistent. Always use exactly the same command for any action you wish your dog to perform.

Dog Training 4 Life begins by explaining the dog's heritage and how the different types of dogs and breeds developed and evolved. In fact it represents a very well structured and thought out piece of work and anyone reading the book from start to finish will not only have a much clearer perspective on training their dog, they will also know exactly why their chosen breed looks and behaves the way he does.

This e-book is phenomenal value. Well over 80 pages jam packed with really great information! It's also written in a style that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end, with an abundance of interesting facts that you just don't find in your average dog training book. The author appears to have taken immense care in constructing and writing the e-book, even including little quotes at the beginning every chapter. My favorite is the one by Will Rogers: "If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went."

She also offers all her customers a great bonus: Unlimited personal consultations with her via email.

Whether you have a new puppy and want to get off on the right foot, have recently adopted an older dog, or you have had a dog for a long time that has behavior issues that you need to remedy, the Dog Training Book Dog Training 4 Life receives my wholehearted recommendation! How to Train Your Dog Not to Bark

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

When a dog is irritated by any sort of heat, cold, hunger or thirst it gets its owners attention by excessive barking. It also barks when it is in pain, sick, lonely or sometimes just plain bored. Dogs will also bark to alert you when someone is near or they sense some sort of danger. Dogs are very jealous companions and will even bark when you are talking to a person or ignoring them. Some breeds are more prone to barking than others.

So how exactly do you get a dog to stop barking so much?

One way could be to focus on teaching the dog TO bark! When you can train your dog to bark on cue you can usually pick up on training them to stop barking on cue as well. Another great example is to teach your dog isolation. Your dog should be able to be alone during certain times of the day without having to continually bark. At first this can be difficult and your dog may think that you have forgotten him or are ignoring him which may prompt him to bark even more but after letting it bark for a while they realize that they are merely wasting their own breath.

If you can not figure out why your dog is barking you may want to try a different approach such as treating it at a mutual level as the rest of your family and find the problem and remove it. The main thing to remember when training your dog is to have a lot of patience and compassion.

Dog: The Definitive Guide For Dog Owners by Bruce Fogle

"Dog: The Definitive Guide For Dog Owners" by Bruce Fogle really does live up to its title. It is a very comprehensive, and yes definitive, guide to dogs for dog owners. It is not an encyclopedia of dog breeds, but rather a guide that takes you through the life stages of your dog, including birth, puppy hood, adolescence and adulthood. This is a very informative book that covers everything a person needs to know about the life of their dog.

This is a large book with a lot of information, and also plenty of great photographs that will be sure to delight dog lovers of all kinds. The book contains a lot of general information about dogs, but then also specifics that will benefit any dog owner, regardless of the breed owned, in fact, there is even a chapter on choosing a new dog, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

After an interesting introduction, chapter one is on how dogs became dogs. Short informative history with great color photographs. From there, chapter two covers how dogs are classified. If you have ever seen a dog show, and wondered how they classified the breeds, wonder no longer. This chapter explains how they do it. Chapter three then focuses on modern dog breeds. Good introduction to various breeds, but not as complete as a book solely on this topic. Chapter four then addresses what makes the modern dog. This chapter provides some interesting information that you don't see included in many dog books.

Chapter five is on puppies in the family pack. It contains information on mating, birth, feeding, and such. Then chapter six covers our relationship with dogs. The section on biting and bites was especially informative for me. Chapter seven provides good information regarding choosing a new dog. Practical advice for anyone wanting a new dog.

The next chapters focus on the life cycle of dogs and begin with chapter eight and canine infancy, then chapter nine on canine puppy hood, chapter ten on canine adolescence, chapter eleven on adulthood, chapter twelve on the older dog, and concluding with a short chapter on the dignified end. These chapters really do cover a lot. Information about anything you need to know about owning your dog is covered here. Training, behavior, socializing with other dogs, feeding, grooming, exercise, health and first aid, traveling, and many other special concerns are covered within these pages.

Sure, you don't need to read and learn about dogs to own one, but the information in this book can make owning a dog easier and happier for both you and your canine friend. This is an excellent resource for any dog owner to have on their shelf.

Dogproblems May Be the Answer to Your Dog Behavior Problems

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you are a dog owner, you know all too well the importance of having a pet whose behavior is not a constant matter of concern and irritation. Countless books have been devoted to helping the pet owner solve the many dog related problems such as pulling on the leash, barking incessantly, puppy chewing, house training, etc. Needless to say, deciding which training source to use can be an exhausting exercise. The purpose of this article is to help you make that choice by reviewing one of those sources, dogproblems.com. We will be examining the following areas: (1) how extensive the list of dog behavior problems is so you can have assurance that your particular area of need is included, (2) what kind of support is available to give you the comfort that the suggested solutions will actually work.

Dogproblem.com's claim of "An all-in-one dog training resource for owning, training and fixing your dog's behavior problems" appears to be fairly accurate. The subject matter in this book with respect to dog training and selecting and choosing a puppy, appears inexhaustible, including how to articles and videos, member forums, consultations with canine specialists, and member photo sharing. Without exploring every one of the 42 alphabetically listed departments, from "adopting a dog" to "submissive urination" it appears the dog owner can find a solution for practically any subject. This is different from many sites or books that seem to concentrate on only one or two problems.

With regard to your confidence that applying the suggested remedies will result in success, let's take a look at how thorough each problem is covered and what kind of support is available. Each particular area of concern, or department, gives the pet owner a number of solutions. For example, if you were trying to house train your puppy you would go to the "Dog House Training" department. Here you will find seven different articles covering subjects such as: correcting when they do it in the wrong place, praising when they do it in the right place, establishing a "doody area" and a "get busy" elimination command.

If the article or video still leaves questions, a forum is available that allows pet owners to share their experiences with other owners. In addition, this venue also offers unlimited consultation with a team of dogproblems.com canine behavior experts. This combination of articles, forums, and consultation should give you both the knowledge and the support to successfully solve your dog behavior problems.

The only negative I could find, if it is truly a negative, is that the wealth of information can be overwhelming initially. Perhaps it could be organized somewhat better to make it a little easier to sort through.

When looking to invest in dog training, you have a choice of many different sites, books, and prices. It can be a difficult decision no matter how amazing the claims may be. A review of dogproblems.com seems to indicate a site that gives the pet owner a solution to almost any problem imaginable. What is most important is that the support offered through videos, forum access to other dog owners and consultation with canine behavior experts should give the pet owner confidence in a successful outcome.

There are plenty of books out there on cute and cuddly puppies but very few like Old Dogs, Gene Weingarten's book on older canine friends. Often forgotten, Weingarten contends that older dogs are the best dogs and in his book plays out all the reasons why you shouldn't neglect your old friend and be forever searching for that new puppy. The book celebrates the older canines as true troopers in their lives as pets. It shows that not just puppies are cute, interesting and fun.

In Old Dogs, the author shows the beauty of the old dog through spectacular photographs of wizened mature dogs in their everyday life. With each photograph there is an anecdote of a story about the dog being pictured. There are also entertaining biographies of the dogs telling about their long lives and their achievements and antics. The book really showcases the unabashed personalities of old dogs, their quirks and their unapologetic behavior and attitudes towards their owners. It also showcases their loyalty as well. We all know that mature dogs are loyal and will follow their masters to the ends of the earth.

What you will see in the book, the writer and illustrator worked hard to achieve. That is visions of older animals at their best. In with the funny anecdotes and dog owner's musings are deep and tender stories including dealing with the death of an old faithful dog. This book will not only be cherished by dog lovers for generations to come but can be enjoyed by anyone else as well. Even non owners will get a real kick out of the book. Even cat owners will be entertained by the crystal clear pictures and witty writing. That is saying something for sure.

Secrets to Dog Training – Can You Really Learn Them?

People often get frustrated when they are trying to train their dog or change their behavior. They read many books and try to apply the various principles with no result. They wonder if there is a secret that they are not aware of.

The problem with this scenario is that they are confusing their dog. By constantly changing tactics, they prevent their dog from learning what they want. The dog owner must be consistent with their training in order for their pet to learn what they are trying to teach.

Expert Daniel Stevens has written a book called Secrets to Dog Training. He details the methods you need to train your dog quickly and easily. Many different scenarios are dealt with and, with behavioral issues are discussed.

Problem behaviors can be extremely frustrating and difficult to deal with. Does your dog run outside every time the door opens? Does your dog bark the entire time he is outside? Maybe you are trying to figure out a way to stop him from jumping on you. There are many behaviors that dog owners have to deal with and attempt to change. This can be a challenge for the puppy but dealing with a grown dog can be worse. People often think you cannot change a dog's behaviors once it is grown.

The Secrets to Dog Training will show you how to work with an adult dog to make it obedient and well-behaved. This book dispels the myth that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. It may take longer for your dog to relearn his behavior, but it can be done with patience and consistency.

A dog with behavioral problems will be a challenge to take for a walk. He will pull on the leash and try to dart away when he sees something interesting. By the time you get home, you are exhausted and frustrated. If you teach your dog the proper behavior when he is on a leash, your walks will be much more pleasant and enjoyable for you and your pet.

Never use the word "come" when you're mad at your dog or he will learn to associate that with getting in trouble. You will have trouble getting him to come to you at all, even if it is for something he will enjoy. The book tells you other ways to get him to respond when he is doing something wrong.

The key to getting your dog to obey your commands is making sure he understands what you want. Since he does not understand human language, he uses tone of voice and body language to develop the meaning of a command. When the owner gets frustrated and allows it to reflect in their voice, the dog will be even less likely to understand what you are telling him.

By learning the techniques used by professional dog trainers, you can teach your dog to be well-behaved and disciplined. The Secrets to Dog Training will show you how to develop the skills you need.

A Dog's Purpose by w. Bruce Cameron-More Than Just A Dog Story

In his first book, newspaper columnist w. Bruce Cameron tells the story of reincarnation as seen and experienced through the eyes of a dog. What makes this book so poignant is that the author really seems to understand how a dog would speak and feel. Sooner or later, anyone who has ever owned a dog has looked into those big brown eyes and wondered what he or she was thinking.

Many of us have also wondered about the meaning of life. What is its purpose? If a human life has a goal, then does a dog's life have a purpose? Dogs serves many functions in the lives of their humans from companion, security guard, baby sitter, to guide and herder. This is the species that is referred to as man's best friend and also, when someone is working very hard, they are said to be working like a dog. So in our lives they serve many purposes.

Perhaps the biggest question in life is, why are we here? Animal lovers may also ask, why are dogs here? According to author Cameron, it is reincarnation. The main character in this book starts out as Toby the hard luck dog that winds up being rescued by an unlicensed rescuer, but that ends badly. Our hero returns in his next incarnation in a puppy mill and suffers again, this time at the hands of the thoughtless owner.

Through each incarnation the main character suffers and grows through the experience just as those who believe in the many lives philosophy think each human grows from multiple lives. For the dog lover, it may be a little difficult to get through some of the sadder parts of the book and rest assured there are quite a few of them. You will want to have a good hankie or two at hand.

But in the end, the answer and meaning of all that suffering and pain is revealed. There are two cautions that should go along with this review, the first is that if you are deeply affected by the suffering of animals, this book may have a profound effect. Secondly, if your religious or spiritual beliefs find the idea of reincarnation as offensive or disturbing, you may also have a problem with this book.

There are quite a few books that try to tell a story from a dog's point of view. W. Bruce Cameron got it right with his first book. This reader is sure that people who love a good dog story and animal fiction will want to see more from this author. A good four star book.
