The Ultimate Guide to a Happy Healthy Guinea Pig - A Review of the eBook by Rachel Garlick

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Introduction and Overview:

Overall the eBook "The Ultimate Guide to a Happy Healthy Guinea Pig" is a very good reference guide about the care of your cavies. It gives you a lot of helpful tips on housing, diet, behavior, grooming, common health issues and breeding of these small pets. It also includes information on the history of the animal and some facts about different breeds of guinea pigs.

Product Overview:

The Ultimate Guide to a Happy Healthy Guinea Pig by Rachel Garlick is a 65 page PDF downloadable eBook. It is currently priced at $14.77 while it is being market tested, but the author warns that after the test market concludes it will rise in price to $20.00.

There are three bonuses that were included in the $14.77 price. The bonuses are Guinea Pig Names (PDF format), Guinea Pig Quick Start (PDF format), and Guinea Pig Shopping (HTML Document). The Guinea Pig Names bonus helps you to choose a name for your furry friend from many popular and creative categories like cartoon characters and food. Guinea Pig Quick Start is a guide for the items and supplies you will need when you first bring your piggy home. The last bonus "Guinea Pig Shopping" contains a number of pictures of the items you will need to shop for before you bring your companion home.

What I Like About The Ultimate Guide to a Happy Healthy Guinea Pig

The most important information that is included in this eBook in my opinion is the list of foods that your pig can eat and the foods that can harm or possibly kill your pig. It was especially helpful to read about the dangerous foods for your pigs. For example, did you know potato peels are bad for your pig to eat?

Also, it was interesting to learn that these small rodents and humans share a common trait: we both can't manufacture vitamin C. That is why it is important that your pig has vitamin C in their pellets, veggies, fruits and a supplement to be healthy and to avoid getting scurvy.

When it comes to shopping for a cage for your pig(s) the bigger the better is the rule. The eBook suggests 7.5 sq. ft (30"x36") for one and 10.5 sq. ft (30"x50") for two pigs. This is consistent with what is generally recommended by pig rescue organizations for cage sizes. The eBook informs you that a wire grid bottom for your cage can harm your pig's delicate feet and definitely should be avoided.

The guide discusses the different behaviors and that your pigs are social animals. This chapter was helpful on understanding my pigs and interpreting what their behavior means.

What I Did Not Like About The Ultimate Guide to a Happy Healthy Guinea Pig

The eBook does not include any information about the Cubes and Coroplast (C&C) cages that are a popular cage system for providing a larger and healthier environment for your small pig. The shopping guide bonus only included pictures of pet store cages that are too small and cramped.

I also would have liked to see a warning about keeping your pigs in an aquarium, which can cause respiratory problems from the ammonia fumes. The glass enclosure does not let the air circulate and the ammonia fumes from the urine can be harmful to your pig.

Rating

I would rate this eBook 4.0 out of 5 stars. The reason I did not rate it 5 stars is because they did not provide any information on how to build or obtain a larger and healthier C&C cage for your pigs that meets their minimum cage-size requirements.

The "Ultimate Guide to a Happy Healthy Guinea Pig" was worth the $14.77 for all of the helpful information and bonuses that it included. It would be especially beneficial for the beginner that never cared for a guinea pig before. Many people do not know the proper diet for a guinea pig and their need for vitamin C. In conclusion, I would recommend it for those that care enough to seek out the knowledge necessary to provide their pig(s) the best living environment possible.

We here at Blue Stone Commerce are pet owners as well as pet cage sellers. In fact, our very first cages were designed and built strictly for our own personal use. It wasn't until we saw how much happier, more active and content our pigs became when we put them into their new spacious C&C cage; that we realized just how great an environment these cages could offer our pigs.

Confessions of a Dog Catcher by Lisa Duffy-Korpics - A Book Review

AppId is over the quota

Confessions of a Dog Catcher by Llisa Duffy-Korpics, is one of those hidden gems that deserves a wider audience. Even nine five-star reviews probably won't be enough to save this book, which means it will probably be as lost and forgotten as some of the stray animals Lisa rounds up.

This book is far better written (and infinitely more entertaining) than some books offered to us from major New York publishers. Lisa knows how to tell a story. Each chapter shares an episode from her four years as an Animal Control Officer, working her way through college in a small town on the Hudson that appears to be Peekskill, New York. Peekskill combines snowy winters, steep hills and amazing views of the Hudson River. But Lisa shows us an aspect of the town even residents rarely see: the complex relationships of people and pets.

Lisa shares the good, the bad and the evil. Sometimes she gets to save an animal's life. Sometimes she gets in bizarre situations (like the woman who thought "feed and water the kittens" meant "throw water on them"). And she meets people who are so cruel it's breathtaking.

Even the upbeat ending fits the story. Lisa's a natural writer. She describes filling in as a school crossing guard, having the kids skip across the street. She's a natural with kids and she must be a pretty amazing person. She's headed for a teaching career, where she'll undoubtedly make a contribution. I hope her next book gets a stronger platform for publication.

Understanding the Best Rabbit Food

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you have recently taken possession of a cute little bunny then you will need to make sure you get hold of a supply of the right rabbit food. There are actually a range of options available from pet stores, this does not make the task any easier. The following information should give you a better understanding of exactly what you should be giving to your new pet.

A wise choice for a young rabbit would be alfalfa hay. This would provide them with a good dose of carbohydrate and calcium. The looser the strands the better amount of digestion that can take place.

All rabbits enjoy eating fresh green vegetables. This is a primary ingredient in their natural diet. Try to vary the selection on different days. A good choice would be such products as broccoli, spinach, celery, lettuce, and even garden grass. Keep an eye on their toilet movements to ensure that the vegetables do not cause any diarrhoea or similar problems.

There is nothing wrong with giving your rabbit the occasional piece of fruit but too much can make them unwell and even cause tooth decay. If you want to give fruit then choose varieties that can be chewed easily.

Most pet stores sell specialist rabbit pellets that are a great way to make sure they are having the right balance of nutrition. With a young rabbit understand exactly the correct amount as you would not want them to get obese.

You should not overlook the importance of water. Be certain that the rabbit has access to clean and fresh water each day. Do not let the liquid become stale or contaminated by food.

Owning a rabbit can provide much pleasure and enjoyment. It is important to return the favor by ensuring they have an adequate and healthy diet at all times.

Finding the best rabbit food on the UK market is now as easy as pie. More info now on http://www.burgesspetcare.co.uk/products/rabbit.html.

What to Look For in a Dog-training Program

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you have searched for a dog training program, you are well aware that there is a multitude of choices. How can you make a decision and feel confident in doing so? This article will explore 3 main areas of consideration and see how dogproblems.com performs. These subjects include: (1) does the program address my current dog behavior problem and are solutions extensive enough to cover any likely future problems? (2) does the program offer sufficient support to give me confidence in successful solutions? (3) what if I change my mind, or the program is not what I expected - is there a money back guarantee?

Consideration #1: Which program best addresses my particular problem, both now and for the likelihood of future problems?   dogproblems.com has 42 different departments addressing particular dog problems, within which are contained anywhere from three to a dozen or more separate discussions on the subject and its variations. I can't imagine any problem that would not be addressed. If there is any question, you can go directly to dogproblems.com and review the various departments and their content.

Consideration #2 Is there sufficient support to give me confidence that I will be able to implement the suggested solution successfully?   This is where dogproblems.com really shines. If applying the written solution is not successful, there are videos available on a number of subjects that may show you whether you have applied the solution correctly. If you're still not successful, you have access to other dog owner members in the forum and their experiences. Finally, you can also consult with the staff of canine behavior experts that are available through the forum.

Consideration #3: What if I don't like the program, or change my mind?   In this case, dogproblems.com offers a 30-day no questions asked money back guarantee. I would think any dog-training program that has confidence in its results would offer some type of guarantee.    In summary, when you are looking to purchase a training program that best addresses the various problems associated with dog ownership, dogproblems.com certainly seems one that can provide all the answers. Dogproblems.com is by no means the only available program, but certainly passes muster in this critics mind. When you analyze different programs, I suggest you not only be sure it covers a great deal of subjects, but also that it offers support to make sure the solutions are successful. This support should include: written solutions, videos, and a forum with other dog owners, and free consultation with canine behavior experts.    Best of luck to you, as a fun and satisfying relationship with your dog can be one of the greatest experiences of all.

In One Nation Under Dog, Michael Schaffer explains what our dogs have come to mean to us throughout the centuries. Dogs are members of the family and some are even treated just like kids would be. It is truly amazing the value we place on our dogs and Schaffer outlines it very well in this book. Whether you are a new or seasoned dog owner this book needs to be on your shelf. It is not only good as a reference book but it is an entertaining read as well.

One cannot help to be entertained by the lively little book. Mr. Schaffer is so great at making the book come to life. He covers just about every aspect of dog life as well as life with the pet. The book is chock full of tips and advice on what to do to make your dog's life the best it can be as well as your life with the dog. Everything from how to select a dog and where to go to get it to picking a veterinarian can be found within the pages of One Nation Under Dog.

Along with the practical advice in, the author shows dog owners how to have fun with their pets. He takes a lot of the tasks of pet ownership and makes them seem simple and easy. The writer also gets into products for dogs, their prices, what is good, etc. It is very helpful as a soup to nuts primer on dog ownership. There is even a legal section that provides a good overview on the law and how it applies to dog ownership. That alone is worth the price of the book. The book also goes into the business of dogs and how much money is spent in the country on dogs and being a dog owner.

Also, in One Nation Under Dog, Michael Schaffer shows us the origin of snob appeal when it comes to our canine friends. He touches on subjects many people wouldn't even think of. Pet Clean-Up Made Easy by Don Aslett

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Don Aslett is called America's #1 Cleaning Expert, and for good reason, he knows cleaning. He also knows a lot about time management, organization, and getting things done, but most of all, he knows cleaning. "Pet Clean-Up Made Easy" is his guide to cleaning up pet messes, including what tools and products to use and where to find them. It's a practical book that not only helps you clean up messes, but shows you strategies to "petproof" your home and prevent messes from happening. Sounds sort of like something Sun Tzu would teach, "Win without fighting."

The book is easy to read and has the illustrations that Aslett's books are know for. I personally really like the illustrations in his books and feel they add to his message. They make the books more fun to read. This book has a brief introduction and six main chapters.

Chapter One: Pet Cleaning 101. This chapter covers important tools and cleaning techniques for all kinds of pet cleanup chores. I like that he lists different tools and what they are for, as well what deodorizers do, and some other little tips for various situations.

Chapter Two: Good Clean Living - With Pets. A chapter on preventative measures to avoid germs and keep your home mess-free. Aslett discusses ways to control pet diseases, disinfectants, and how to organize a pet control center, as well as other important tips.

Chapter Three: Housebreaking. A chapter on eliminating cleanup problems trough training dogs and cats. Cages, crates, and litter boxes are a few of the topics covered here.

Chapter Four: In Case of Accident. This chapter contains pointers for cleaning up pet messes. Not the most pleasant of topics, but important if you are a pet owner. Asless deals with cleaning up urine and cleaning up feces. Also included is cleaning up vomit. Again, not pleasant, but important when you need it.

Chapter Five: Hairy Animal Tales. With most pets come hair, so this chapter deals with shedding, bathing, and flea control. There are tips on grooming, hair pickup tools, and giving your pet a bath. There is also some very good information about fleas and how to prevent them, or how to get rid of them, depending on what you need.

Chapter Six: Pets Do the Darndest Things. The final chapter of the book focuses on pet problems and occasional misbehavior. Pets jumping on things or people, tracking in dirt or mud, scratching, and chewing on things are some of the problems dealt with in this chapter.

If you own a pet, this is a great book to assist you with keeping your home clean. It also contains some very practical advice to raising pets that will make the experience more rewarding for you and your animals. I highly recommend Aslett's books as enjoyable, practical, and spot-on (Or should I say spot-off) with his advice and strategies.

Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer-A Review

Most dog owners acknowledge the importance of training their pets. However, many of them often make mistakes in conducting training. What's worse is that they don't even know they are committing these mistakes. This is the reason why professional trainer Adam Katz came up with the book "Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer."

Katz wanted to help owners save money, time, and frustration over training failures through his book. The information and instructions contained in Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer are supposed to help you avoid common training mistakes and their disastrous consequences. The question is, "Does the book really contain the kind of useful information that it promises to give?" This brief review aims to help you decide whether Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer is the right training guide for you.

First, let's look at what you will get when you purchase Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer. The book itself has 151 pages full of information on ownership and training. There aren't so many pictures in the book, which means that there is indeed a great deal of information. In fact, you may have to read through it two to three times in order to have a complete grasp of the information provided.

One of the most important things you learn upon reading Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer is that the problems owners face are universal and so are the solutions to these problems. Here are some of the general principles that you need to apply when trying to solve dog problems:

-Training must work towards building the dog-owner relationship that is based on mutual trust and respect.

-Positive reinforcement and calm behaviour correction always works better than punishment.

-Use your dog's natural instincts to your advantage during training.

-Dogs don't speak English, so you need to learn to communicate with your pet such that he understands exactly what you expect him to do; it may be best to mimic the way dogs communicate among themselves (through body language).

Basically, as long as you apply these principles in training then you're most likely to succeed. Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer contains tips and advice not only on current dog training, but also on choosing the right dog, on the dog's growing-up needs, and choosing the right collar, among other things. It also contains a portion where you are told how professional trainers like the author himself raise their own dogs.

Aside from the main Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer book, you also get several bonuses when you make the purchase. These bonuses include three other books that specifically tackle the subjects of establishing yourself as the Alpha Dog, fixing dog aggression training your dog to walk with a collar and leash, and choosing a veterinarian. You also get lists of where to buy wholesale dog products and websites on dog training. Finally, you get $ 25 worth of free Email consultation with the author himself.

All in all, Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer is probably the most complete and comprehensive dog training guide on the market today. And while it can benefit all dog owners, it can be especially useful to first time owners who want to train their dogs in the comfort of their own homes.

Your Dog: The Owner's Manual by Marty Becker

This book is broken down into four sections: Fresh Starts and New Beginnings (finding the right pet), How to Care for and Keep Your Pet Healthy and Safe (eating, grooming and everyday care), The Social Behavior (training) and In Sickness and in Health (preventive care, emergencies, medical care and special care for the aging dog).

In the first section, we are given information on how to deal with a breeder as you are looking for your dog. You will also find information about the different kinds of breeds available. Dr Becker lists many of the basic items you will need for your dog such as a brush, crates, dishes and dental care necessities.

In the second section, you will find information on what your dog should eat, on weight control, canned vs. homemade pouched food, treats and food. There is also a great source of information on exercise for your dog and activities like fetching and swimming. There is a wealth of information on grooming and brushing teeth. You will learn to use the right tools for grooming and several tips for bathing your dog. You are also told how to prevent catastrophes.

The third section covers behavior training and socialism. You will learn to be consistent when training your puppy and the right time to give praise. How do you handle a puppy that is chewing and doing other naughty things such as biting and barking? You will find the answer to these questions in this section.

In the fourth section, we learn that is very important to find a good veterinarian. Once that is done your dog should have a wellness exam. This book does an excellent job of informing the dog owner about what is checked in this exam. You will understand why preventive care is so very important. We are also given information on how to deal with emergencies and what you should have in the first-aid kit for your dog. There is information on caring for an aging dog and when a decision must be made to say goodbye to your elderly pet.

As you can see, this book is an excellent source for anyone who owns or wants to own a dog. This is a book you will want to keep on your shelf as a handy reference. Dr. Becker is an expert in this area and he has created this manual for dog owners. He also has many money saving tips listed. I have read many books and guides about dogs but Your Dog: The Owner's Manual has to be the best and most comprehensive one I have read.

Secrets to Dog Training to Stop Your Dog's Behavior Problems

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Do you want to put a stop to your dog behavior problems? One top training package, Secrets To Dog Training effectively helps puppy and dog owners teach their dogs good behavior and obedience.

Do you have a generally disobedient dog? Or do you have a puppy that bite, bark, whine, pace and destroy things? Either way, the answer to solving your dog's current behavioral issues lies in giving your dog effective behavior training.

Behavioral science has shown that with good dog training, it will help you and your dog build a better relationship and establish a tighter bond together but more importantly, it will also help your dog suppress any aggressive behavior, become more obedient, confident and less fearful of the surrounding environments.

And when it comes to giving good training to your dog, there are two options that you can choose from. The first option is to either attend a puppy training class or engage in the service of a professional dog trainer which can cost quite a bit. Alternatively, the cheaper second option is to train your dog personally though your inexperience may cause you to do the wrong thing. Yet, problems like these can definitely be minimized by reading and learning from good dog training books.

One such effective dog training guides that has helped over 216,245 dog owners worldwide overcome their puppies and dog behavior problems is Secrets To Dog Training by Daniel Stevens.

Formerly known as Sit Stay Fetch, Secrets To Dog Training is an excellent visual and audio learning tool (with a total of nine chapters and over 261 pages of detailed instruction and multiple real life case studies) to take you step-by-step on how to quickly identify and solve dog behavior problems, such as:

How to select, buy, raise and care for a puppy or older dog, covering subjects such as diet and nutrition, house training, how to puppy-proof your home, choosing a vet, grooming and general health.Fixing common dog behavior problems including biting, nipping, aggression, digging, disobedience, fighting with other dogs, excessive barking, separation anxiety and many more. How to train your dog virtually any command and tricks including Come, Sit, Stay, Hold, Leave, Seek, Beg, Catch, Crawl, and even climb ladders!

Additionally, the guide Secrets To Dog Training also comes with extra bonuses including separate books on "A Quick Guide To Dog Aggression", "Tips on Security Training Your Dog", and "Dog Grooming Made Easy", "All the House Training Methods and Tricks", and "Secrets To Becoming The Alpha Dog" which covers more specific training subjects.

So if you are a dog owner who has a new puppy or owns a older dog that has some kind of behavior problems, then you should at least check out Daniel's Secrets To Dog Training guide. The information within is comprehensive and yet so simple to comprehend that you would certainly benefit and experience tremendous improvement in your dog behavior after reading and following the advice in it.

Praise For Allie Larkin's First Novel, "Stay"

Allie Larkin's novel, "Stay," is romantic fiction at its best. Larkin gives us a smart, funny, and vulnerable heroine hopelessly in love with an exasperating guy. She mixes this formula up with an endearing cast of supporting characters and her piece de resistance is a once-in-your-life-steal-your-heart dog. If you like contemporary love stories and dogs, you will love this book.

That time-tested formula of girl-meets-boy is already at work in the Prologue. "Six years ago, Peter and I were having one of our weekly dinners at this little Italian restaurant just off campus. The food wasn't good and the service was awful, but they served us without asking for ID if we ordered by the bottle instead of the glass. " (page 1)

Peter sits across from Savannah (known as Van to family and friends) telling her that he's pretty sure he passed all of his freshman exams. Van is "... too busy studying the angle of his perfect square jaw and thinking what it would feel like to press (her) lips against his slightly stubby chin and work her way down his neck." (pages 1-2)

The Van imagines the next step in her "pornographic daydream," Peter interrupts her train of thought by asking how she thinks she did on her Rhetoric. Van's non-committal response of "It wasn't too--it was fine." as she fails to meet Peter's eye, juxtaposes the depth of her feelings for this boy onto her lack of self-confidence. (page 2)

They trade one liners:

"I always have such a great time with you, Peter said, splitting the rest of the wine between our glasses.
"I am a hell of a lot of fun," I deadpanned, finally getting the courage to look him in the eye again. (page 2)

He is: oblivious to how she feels. She is: not going to tell him how she feels. They are: drunk. Her heart thumped in a drunken beat "and her hand" wobbled "as she raises her wine glass. "His bottom lip was stained purple from the wine, but his teeth were as perfect as Chiclets." (page 2) Peter's next comment is unexpected and climatic, deliberately so as Larkin writes it: "Will you marry me," he asked, clinking his glass against mine, "if we're not married by the time we're thirty?" (page 2)

This is skillful writing. By the time we get to Peter's marriage proposal, we want it to be an out pouring of his love for her because Van so desperately wants this. Larkin brings us to that emotional high with Van and then, immediately after Peter finishes his statement, Larkin smacks us down along with Van into Peter's obliviousness is Van's feelings.

Van herself aptly describes the roller coaster of emotions she's now riding in the next two sentences:

"My pulse spiked the elation crashed into the result of being his back up plan. From fiancee to consolation prize in a matter of seconds. " (page 2)

She may be drunk in this first scene, but Larkin leaves no doubt that Van is also resolute and determined, giving Van the last word: "Make it thirty-two, I said, clenching my teeth into a smile."At least give me a fighting chance, "(page 2)

Wasting no time, Chapter one takes us right back to the top of that emotional roller coaster the Van tells us that "The wedding was more than I ever could have wished for." Just when we think that Van has gotten her heart's desire, we find out that she's not the bride, she's the bridesmaid, and the story is off and running. (page 3)

We are quickly introduced to Van's best friend Jane (the bride) and Jane's parents, Peter's family, and we begin to find out about Van's past: where she grew up, what her mom was like, and, that six years after that dinner with Peter, Van is still hopelessly in love with him

The Peter and Jane promise to love, honor and obey, Van is left to pick up the pieces of her shattered heart and get on with her life. She already has a job-one that lets her work from home and provides her a comfortable income so that she supports herself. She's smart enough to realize that it's more than time to get over her first love, but between that knowledge and the moving on part is an enormous learning curve. One that she's not sure she can make by herself.

She's dealt with a lot in her twenty-three years as Larkin deftly reveals in the next series of chapters, moving easily from past to present the the wedding scene unfolds. By the time the wedding is over, most of the secondary characters have been introduced.

As the story continued, I found myself engaged in heated arguments with almost all of them, especially with Diane, occasionally with Jane, most often with Van. I suspect the appeal was that at various points in my life, I've been like Jane and like Van. If you've ever been so me-focused that you selfishly hurt your best friend, then you've been Jane too. For everyone who's had their heart broken for the very first time and had to move on, you've been Van.

How does Diane fit into this three-some? She's the woman left behind. The woman whose best friend dies leaving a daughter that is best friends with her daughter. And, oh, by the way, her daughter and her friend's daughter are in love with the same guy.

The catalyst for change in this story is Van's spur-of-the-moment decision to get a dog. She makes this choice in a drunken stupor after the wedding is over and she's back home scrolling the internet. As she slurps Kool-Aid mixed with vodka, her thoughts twirl faster and faster, around and around like a never-ending carousel.

She sits watching television before going online. Ironically, the show she stumbles upon is the wedding on Lifetime, so most likely, the bride was going to find out that her husband was really married to women all over the country, or that her maid of honor was trying to kill her. .. at that moment in the movie, everyone was all scuba sea snorkel and delighted with themselves, and it made me sick. " (page 54)

Watching this TV couple, Van finally realizes that Peter doesn't love her, giving these words the double-edged poignancy. Quickly switching channels, she finds herself watching a movie about Rin Tin Tin. "... the dog was incredible ...He was always there when needed. He never let anyone down. " (page 54)

And that becomes what Van wants-to not be let down. She wants a friend. Once she goes online to search for her dog, her life will never be the same again.

Getting a dog doesn't magically take care of what's wrong in Van's life, but it does help her begin to take those first tentative steps towards getting what she does want. As she falls head-over-heels in love with a five month old purebred German Shepherd, she slowly falls in love with who she is and what she has to offer in a relationship.

Larkin never lets us down. She refuses to write a "cookie-cutter" cutesy, love story. And, she doesn't stop writing until Van has come to terms with everyone in her life and found her true love.

This is a book that will stay with you long after you've finished reading it.

The Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein - A Dog's Life

AppId is over the quota

In The Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein tells the story of a dog through the dog's voice. Lots of people compare it to Marley & Me, except it is very different from that book. This is a book that will make even the hardened laugh and cry and experience every emotion known to man. This book is narrated by Enzo the dog and told with a touching sense of humanity that drags you right into the story. Every experience that Enzo brings to life makes you feel like you are part of the story and that Enzo is right in the room telling it to you.

In The Art of Racing in the Rain, the author weaves a fun filled tale full of funny and sad moments all at once. It is about life, it is about death, it is about pet lovers and people in general. It underscores how much we love our pets in the manner in which it is written. We come to believe that Enzo is really for real and actually a talking dog. It is so amazing how Garth pulls that off. It is a talent not a lot of writers possess.

In the pages of the book that comes to life, the writer shows us the foibles of life as a dog. The wants and needs and wishes. Enzo would like to be reincarnated as a human and see life through the eyes of a human. It is a fun and intriguing paradox told with what can only be described as sincerity and a true understanding of knowing what a dog might want. You get the feeling that Stein is truly a lover of dogs and has spent a lot of time getting to understand them and know them. He brings Enzo to life so perfectly.

With The Art of Racing in the Rain, Garth Stein has created a timeless piece that will thrill and enthrall generations for years to come. Whether you are a dog lover or not, you will be absolutely taken with this charming and heartwarming novel. It will bring you years of joy. Dorothy's Heroic Measures Make A Wonderful Story

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

I loved this book the most. Jill Ciment tells the story of an elderly couple in New York City living in a 5th floor walk-up. Their cat, Dorothy, is a precious dachshund who they adore. She is about 14 years old and the night before they are having an open house to show their apartment so they can sell it, she becomes ill. Alex and Ruth want to move to a building with an elevator as their apartment is five floors of tough climbing, especially at their age!

Dorothy has evidently hurt her back and in the cold, New York weather, they place her on their cutting board and cover her to take her far away to the emergency animal hospital. Getting a taxi that will get them there quickly is difficult as a tanker truck has jack-knifed and turned over in the tunnel stopping all traffic in and out of Manhattan as the driver ran away and is suspected as a terrorist.

The story develops around that incident in that if people are scared, they are likely to offer less for the apartment and with the showing of the condo to some superbly described characters by Ciment, there is the phone calls back and forth with the hospital where Dorothy has to have a risky surgery to see if she will ever walk again. I loved when the chapters alternated from Dorothy's point of view to the narrator as Dorothy described what was happening from her dog's eye view.

How the story ends would be a spoiler so I will stop there....but does Dorothy survive the surgery? Do Alex and Ruth sell their apartment and get into a new elevator installed building? Does the terrorist really follow through on an attack? It is an easy read but sweet and enjoyable and very cleverly written. I would like to read more by Jill Ciment after reading this book.

Lost Souls Found By Kyla Duffy And Lowrey Mumford

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

In this book, you find over 30 short accounts of people who have a rescued Boston Terrier. Some stories are fun and some serious. Several stories relate the awful thing about "puppy mills" and what happens to dogs there where they are used to breed purebred dogs and then they either die, or are abandoned or worse, once they are no longer of any use to the people who run these awful places. Many of the stories are heartwarming and funny. All in all, the stories give people the idea of how wonderful these little dogs are and how important it is that everyone remembers that there are so many dogs that need to be rescued and adopted.

One of the stories, "Eyes Only For You", tells about how an owner connects with his rescue dog just from the friendly eyes he sees when he meets her. In a sad story with a happy ending "Foster Failure" tells of a dog that nobody wanted and was taken in at a foster puppy home only to find the foster parents fell in love with the dog and wound up adopting him. This family gave a home to the poor dog who had lived such an awful life in a puppy mill. A few pages such as "A Snort Break" give a few sentences telling happy tails or funny moments about different Terriers.

I believe that a book like this would open any one's eyes to the importance of choosing a rescue dog when the opportunity arises. As different books on different breeds are written and read, I imagine even more breeds of dogs will be better off and more dogs adopted. Perhaps you might have a rescue dog story of your own or may want to adopt a rescue dog after reading about these great animals and all they go through.

My Dog is a Genius by David Taylor

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

"My Dog is a Genius" is a very informative book. It is written by David Taylor who is a highly respected veterinary surgeon. He founded the International Zoo Veterinary Group in 1969 and now travels widely across the globe, treating any animals he come across which need help. He is the author of over 40 pet-care books including the bestsellers 'The Ultimate Dog', 'You and Your Dog', and 'Think Cat'.

It starts off with the author explaining about dogs and their history and how humans started to domesticate them. As you read on, David Taylor went on to talk about the scientific evidence of dog's intelligence. Times are different now and many behaviorists are studying animals and their way of communication.

David Taylor also goes on to discuss about dog's intelligence, such as different breeds belong to a certain category and so do their cleverness, their emotions, scent of smell, hearing and even how to communicate with your dog. What surprised me most was his proof that dogs indeed have memory! And they have 5 different memories. I have always thought that dogs forget events and incidents easily. Now I understand why my dog always barks at the same people. That is because he has social memory!

When I started reading this book, I thought it consists of all words and theoretical analysis. However, as I venture deeper into the book, I came upon this chapter. It is called "How intelligent is your dog". David Taylor actually provided many games and tricks for the dog owners to play with their pets. Most of the games and tricks (tests) are meant to determine your dog's intelligence. I couldn't help bookmarking the interesting games and I could not wait to try it out on my dog! We had a blast! My dog enjoyed his treats and in turn, I got to know that he is indeed clever! There are so many games and tricks which I have yet to finish testing on my dog.

After the fun and games, it's time to mellow down a little. The next few chapters cover basic obedience and behaviors. What about the training method David uses?

"No kind of corporal punishment must ever be used on a dog. Hitting, beating, kicking, pressing the lips down hard on the teeth - all of these are utterly taboo. Acceptable punishments are to interrupt whatever the dog is doing in a strong, sharp, even startling way, perhaps by the use of an air horn, the rattle of a can, a puff from a citronella aerosol, a squirt of water or just a firm, scolding 'No!'." (D. Taylor, p. 100)

David Taylor uses reward method in his dog training. Commands such as watch, sit, down, come and give are some of the training commands covered in step-by-step picture guides. Advance tricks and commands are covered later in the chapters. Tips on agility training are also shared.

This book contains a lot of information on dogs as well as practical work. To date, I find that this is the most interesting and informative book I have ever come across. In fact, I even thought I can rely on this book without having to research on others! This book will definitely help in keeping your dog's brain sharp and both of you entertained and bonded.

Review on Good Dog, Bad Dog

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

While watching shows on television regarding dog/pet training is becoming more and more popular, and trainers are more and more in demand, I have found valuable tips in dog training books.

One of the first books that I ever bought on obedience training, was Good Dog, Bad Dog by Mordecai Siegal and Matthew Margolis. I picked it up because just looking through the contents section, I found 5 areas that I knew I needed help with in learning to live with my new adopted dog. The best part about the book was the style in which it is written. As a reader, you may feel that your dog friend is actually speaking through these authors to you at times.

The methods the authors use to train are simple and do not require you to head to your local pet store for special devices. However, it is important, as they state at the beginning of the book, that everyone in the household needs to take part in the training activities.

I used their method of filling an empty soda can with change/rocks and shaking it at my dog when she did something wrong. It produced brilliant results and there was no shock collar or physical contact needed. Their constant reminder of only one word commands was also very useful and fast in training since it helps reduce confusion on the dogs end.

It was also very useful and helpful that they included a breakdown of all of the different types of training that dogs (AKC) need most. Even if you have a mutt, you can combine the methods for the various breeds and achieve great results.

The best part about the information provided in this book is that it is a wonderful resource to use as a reminder for your current and future pets.

A Member of the Family, Cesar Millan - Just Like a Kid

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The dog whisperer does it again in A Member of the Family. Cesar Millan shows dog owners how to get the most out of your dog's life. Just like on his TV show Millan uses his talent to show any dog lover all they need to know to help make their dog's life as fulfilling and as long as possible. He uses his unique understanding of dogs to weave his story like a fine fabric showing all the ways in which dog ownership can be truly wonderful.

In the highly successful book, the world-renowned author unerringly shows his true and deep love of everything canine. You get the feeling that he truly knows the mind set of dogs and how to break them of bad behavior without any cruelty at all. His approach is calm and sophisticated and uses kindness as its backbone. In this book he teaches how to recognize and correct behavior through psychological means. Even though he isn't degreed and is not a trainer his confidence and knowledge cannot be denied. The best part about the book is not only does he tell why things are happening and what to do to correct them, he shows you how. It is not just philosophy. It is practical application as well.

With this incredible book, Mr. Millan captures your imagination and brings you into the mind of your best friend. He shows you how to read your dog and understand what is going on in his or her mind. Then with very casual and easy language he shows you how to respond to your dog's needs with ease. It is such a good read that even non dog owners enjoy perusing through its pages. The author does something many writers find extremely difficult to do. He writes like he talks and that is what makes the book so great.

Inside A Member of the Family, Cesar Millan creates an atmosphere of knowledge that is so important to understand and practice in order to keep your home a happy one. He introduces us to his family and shows how they interact with each other and the dogs. It is really a great primer and reference book to keep around the house. You will undoubtedly reference the book many times throughout the years and will find it very helpful in so many areas. It's fun, informative and just a darn good read.

A Dog Named Christmas by Greg Kincaid

The local animal shelter has come up with a new program called "Adopt a Dog for Christmas." Todd McCray decides his family should take a dog from the program for the week before Christmas. However, there is one big problem with Todd's plan. He is a 20 year-old, mentally handicapped, adult-child still living at home on the farm in Kansas with his parents and his Dad doesn't want a dog. Todd can be very persuasive so it doesn't take him long to convince his father that this is a good plan. George, his father, tells Todd that he will agree to the plan, but that Todd must realize Christmas ends on December 26 and the dog goes back to the shelter on that day. Todd understands and promises that the dog will be returned to the shelter.

While they are at the shelter picking out their dog, Todd asks the shelter director what will happen to the other dogs. He is very concerned when he learns that those dogs will spend Christmas in their kennels at the shelter.

It has been a McCray Christmas custom to hold an open house on the Sunday before Christmas and nearly all the families in their small town stop by. At that open house, Todd begins telling everyone about the shelter and the "Adopt a Dog for Christmas" program. Gradually he enlists enough families so that every dog is adopted for Christmas week.

Well, as you can imagine, in the week that "Christmas" stays with the McCrays, he worms his way into each heart, especially George's. George, however, is determined to teach Todd that when you make a promise who must keep it. George has also had some heart-wrenching experiences with dogs in the past and he isn't sure that he can survive giving his love to another dog.

There is no doubt that this is a Christmas story first, but it is also the story of a man struggling to be a good parent and a family that is fully supportive of each member. There are so many stories about dysfunctional families, it is wonderful to read about a real family working together to really help each other. If you are a read-aloud together family, a Dog Named Christmas was written for you! If you just want a Christmas story to enjoy, you will not find a better selection. If you get as caught up with George McCray as I did, you can read his story in the prequel, Christmas with Tucker. Be sure to add these to your bookshelf. Put them right beside Miracle on 34th Street.

Tale of the Puppy Mill-Cavalier King Charles Dog-Book Review

Saving Gracie by Carol Bradley is the true story of how a Cavalier King Charles dog is rescued after spending the first six years of her life in a puppy mill. Bradley relies on her journalistic background to peel back the layers of the many lives that intersect in this absorbing story.

If you are a dog lover with no understanding of puppy mills, you'll like the story and the factual information woven in about one of the more detestable elements of how dogs are sold is valuable information.

If you are researching the ugly business of puppy mills and need current statistical information and up-dated resources, this book will be an excellent source for you.

Bradley begins by: imagining the birth of a litter of Cavalier King Charles ' puppies born into puppy mill squalor. She describes the large-scale, shoddily run commercial kennel where the newly born puppies share the crate with their mother.

Too dark to see, the odor of dog feces and the vinegary smell of dog urine; this is the world that this puppy is born into. Her markings are so striking that the "breeder" decides to keep her so that she can churn out even more puppies.

It's a fact that this puppy will spend the next 5-10 years in a cage before she's finally put to death. "The last thing many worn out, vacant-eyed puppy mill dogs experience is a bullet to the head." (pg 5)

As the story continues, Bradley describes how a tip to the Chester County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) opens the door to what will be an investigation into one of our nation's most despicable industries: the commercialized buying and selling of puppies.

The caller describes a kennel that needs to be o magazine. She explained that the breeder had shown her a puppy covered in dried feces and stale urine, and that the breeder didn't seem upset by the puppy's appearance. Horrified, the woman refused to buy the puppy, left quickly and made that phone call.

Investigators will find a total of 337 dogs, 3 cats and two parrots as they go into this kennel to remove animals. The seizure of animals was described as the dismantling of one of the largest puppy mills ever discovered in this country.

Gracie is dog number 132 and the first time we see her is on page 42. She's being held in the arms of one of the investigators as she is photographed. This photo will be entered as evidence against the breeder. She is six years old and she has lived every day of her life in a cage.

Bradley follows behind Gracie every step of the way as she is moved into the shelter system, held there while the legal battle plays out, and then finally placed into the home.

There are plenty of statistics, the wide-ranging cast of human characters to tell their individual stories, and, there are the dogs themselves.

They are in varying stages of physical distress and are emotionally distant-especially the older dogs. Especially dog number 132, who the shelter staff has named Wilma, the dog that Bradley will adopt and rename Gracie.

Two months after being removed from the puppy mill, this dog "... still Sheriff smudged soiled spotted her kennel and stepped in her own feces. Emotionally, she remained maddeningly out of reach ...She was so tiny, so devoid of personality. " (p. 67).

The story of how dog number 132 finds a loving home and learns to trust-the best she can-the human family she will live with for the rest of her life-is woven into the cool, adeptly social and economic issues surrounding puppy mills.

Despite the sorrow and ugliness of this story, Bradley shows us how both humans and dogs really can transcend traumatic experiences. Gracie, scarred by six years of cruelty, does find peace and a measure of happiness with a woman who will love her unconditionally for as long as Gracie lives.

Finally, Bradley shows us that the tentacles of puppy mills snake into every state in this country; that until we completely wipe out this seamy industry, it does affect us all. For those of you who think you know all about this subject and think that puppy mills don't touch you as an individual, you need to read this book more than the rest of us.

A Book Review of "Anyone But You" by Jennifer Crusie

Girl-gets-dog-and-lives-happily-ever-after is a theme alive and well in "Anyone But You" by Jennifer Crusie. This is a delightful romp of romantic fiction that will suck you in if you like sharp dialogue and soulful dogs. For sheer entertainment, this book is hard to beat.

As the story opens, Nina Askew has already decided she wants a dog. "Something perky," she informs the receptionist sitting behind the counter at the Riverbend Animal Control center. (page 7) Nina has just turned forty, the fact that she will wrestle with throughout the story.

Despite the charms of the wriggly pile of puppies that she walks by as she walks through the kennel area of available dogs, Nina finds herself drawn to the sad-sack of an older dog, almost morose and vulture-like sitting there in his pen.

The kennel attendant explains that he is the basset-beagle mix; more basset than beagle. If he isn't adopted today, he'll be ethuanized. And, his name is Fred. He is not cute puppy-.

Nina weighs her options: frisky, adorable puppy or elderly, low-key, not-so-beautiful Fred. Recognizing a kindred spirit, she chooses Fred and takes him home.

Crusie's rather comic description of how Nina chooses Fred is a poignant moment and a triumph for all of the real-life, older dogs that land in shelters through no fault of their own. If only one person reading this book decides to go out and adopt an older dog, what a wonderful testimony to the fictional Fred.

Although Fred never upstages the human characters, he does become the object that jump starts the larger story of Nina's introduction to an engaging young man who is ten years younger than she. His name is Alex.

This witty and fast-paced novel is both hilarious and touching. It's a timeless story that never grows old because some things just never change. Falling in love with a sad-eyed, older dog that no one else wants is heartwarming. We get to cheer for the underdog as he's led off to his forever home.

Juxtapose that story against the magnetic attraction of a younger man for an older woman, have them finally fall in love, and that's the icing on the cake. You can read this novel is sheer entertainment and you won't be disappointed. You can also read it to recapture your faith in the power of laughter and love to ensure happy endings, and you won't be disappointed either.
